Peter Lorre


Peter Lorre was a HungarianAmerican actor. In AustriaHungary, he began his stage career in Vienna before moving to Germany where he had his breakthrough, first on the stage, then in film in Berlin in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Lorre caused an international sensation in the German film M , in which he portrayed a serial killer who preys on little girls.

Lorre was born Lszl Lwenstein onJune 1904, as the first child of a Jewish couple, Alajos Lwenstein and Elvira Freischberger, in the AustroHungarian town of Rzsahegy in Lipt County . His parents had recently moved there following his fathers appointment as chief bookkeeper at a local textile mill. Alajos Lwenstein also served as a lieutenant in the Austrian army reserve, which meant that he was often away on military maneuvers.
